Case Study

Case Studies

Behind the Heroes undertakes case studies for several reasons. On this page we will explain why we do them, the benefits and how to complete one if you've been requested to.

If you want to jump to the form scroll to the bottom of this page.

What is a case study?

In as simple terms as possible, a case study is a record of research into the development of a particular person, group, or situation over a period of time to show any change. It's also a way to capture a particular instance of something used or analysed in order to illustrate a thesis or principle.

Why carry out a case study?

We carry them out for several reasons, these benefits are explored in more detail below.

Helping Veterans

We carry out a case study for veterans who use our service to be able to help them develop a support plan when they attend a camp or event. It will show their thoughts and feelings before, during and after the camp and how they can and have developed and assisted in recovery by attending.

For Funding

We anonymise the information within some case studies with the persons consent to enable us to present data to third party organisations to allow us to secure additional funding and support to continue to give our support for free to the veterans and families in need.

Development

A case study can allow us to review what we do and see what does and doesn't work. It can allow us to improve what we offer veterans and their families.

They also benefit the veteran as they can see how they are benefitting from the camps and more.

How to complete a case study

If you have been requested by a Volunteer at Behind the Heroes we will provide some tips for filling it in here, once you feel ready you can complete the form online below.

The form is split into two short sections. Part one is the case study itself (questions 1-5), part two (questions 6-8) is for our administration system and is strictly confidential.

The Questions Part One (The case study itself)

  1. Who is completing this - We complete case studies for All aspects of our support process. Select the dropdown option which suits you.
  2. About You - Give a brief overview of who you are. If you're a veteran please also give an overview of your service.
  3. What are your challenges - Briefly explain what you may be finding hard etc. If you're an event organiser or land-owner please explain what you're providing our veterans.
  4. What is the intervention - What have you decided to do to change the challenges you're facing. If you're a land-owner or event organiser please say what you believe our veterans will get from this.
  5. What was the outcome - How did carrying out the intervention benefit you, or how did you feel the event went.

The Questions Part Two (The admin)

These questions are just for our administration to ensure we can match the study to the veteran and event for our records.

  • Your full name
  • The date the form was completed
  • Consent to use the case study. (yes or no)

Consent

As we've mentioned previously, we use case studies to enable us to secure future funding, future events and for improving the service that Behind the Heroes offers veterans. By consenting to using your case study we will remove any personally identifiable data and anonymise the information into statistics and comments for this process. It is entirely your own choice to opt in or out, if you do choose to opt in, we thank you in advance for helping shape Behind the Heroes for the better.

Tips

  • Do not use your name in Questions 2-5. Just use an initials If you do need to (eg. John Smith would become JS)
  • Military Service - keep brief. (eg. Served for 10yrs, British Army, Infantry, served in Afghan and Iraq)
  • Challenges you face. Be honest with yourself, list everything you may struggle with. We don't judge, we just want to help you improve your situation. (eg. PTSD, Anxiety, trouble sleeping, short fuse etc)
  • Intervention - What do you want to do. (eg. attend a specific type of camp or activity such as walking)
  • Outcome - Again, be honest with yourself. How did you feel after the camp, were you more relaxed, confident.
  • If you're not sure, just ask. Drop us a message, we are here for you.
